FIREBASE LANDINGS
By Graywolf / 2004
Mission assigned, priority high,
Fire bases need re-supply,
Hanging on props, turbo driven,
Small mistakes are not forgiven,
Spiraling into little jungle hells,
With food, water, and mortar shells,
The runways are short, narrow, and clay,
Where rubber trees were cleared away,
Tents sandbagged to the eaves,
Quad 50s aimed into the jungle leaves,
And all around is razor wire,
With sticks marking fields of fire,
Men covered in clay of red,
Unload the cargo and load the dead,
Without the engines shutting down,
Less time thus spent on the ground,
Then a high speed roll with no center lines,
The over-run area is a field of mines,
Take off, climb out, flying level,
To visit another franchise of the devil.
Father of Dragons
By Graywolf / 2002
A million years ago in China a small blue egg was hatched;
And the little dinosaur looked at the world from a nest, nicely thatched;
And his tail grew long and his teeth grew strong;
Then one day he left his nest and moved along;
But to reproduce with a toothy girl was extremely chancy;
And he never met a dinsaurette that really suited his fancy;
It could have been fate that he waited too late;
For he roamed the world and never found a suitable mate;
He grew old and the winter was cold and one day he finally died;
A long time past until at last his bones were petrified;
And the moon would rise numerous times before a farmer tilled that field;
And was amazed to find the bones that fertile soil would yield;
And wise men came to study the bones and pondered a very long time;
And decided to call it a dragon, after many cups of rice wine;
“We must have a feast to honor this beast”, Said the wisest of them all;
“And a parade with his likeness displayed commencing in the fall”;
So the villagers came and gathered the bones and loaded them in their wagons;
And that is how a lonely dinosaur became the father of all dragons.
MOVIE NIGHT
By Graywolf / 2000
The movie was free for all to see if you cared to do it,
Projected through a building window onto the next one to it,
And moths would fly through the projector light becoming shadows on the screen,
And rain would fall on the watchers all dressed in OD green,
Quietly they sat dripping wet, on sandbags arranged in rows,
Contentedly watching the movie as water soaked through their clothes,
And mosquitoes buzzed around their ears and got into their eyes,
And the dialog was interrupted by thundering jets rising to the skies,
A hundred soldiers, far from home, sitting in the rain,
Dripping wet, intently watching Tarzan swing with Jane.
TOP FUEL
By Graywolf / 1998
Pearl paint and shining plated parts;
Powerful engines on streamlined karts;
Chrome pipes, tipped with fire;
Lined up on the lights, tire to tire;
Hemi thunder hooked to monster tires;
The acrid smell, as the nitro fires;
Exploding fuel drives spinning steel;
At the Christmas tree, wheel to wheel;
The green lights launch the V-8 pair;
Front ends rise into the air;
A deafening rush down a quarter mile track;
Then quiet as chutes pop out the back;
Now two more drivers wait for the lights to turn green;
To see who has the fastest machine.
NIGHT PATROL
By Graywolf / 1999
Green leaves cast shadows on green men, stealing through the night;
And the mist hangs just above the ground, caught in pale moonlight;
Quietly pushing through wet brush, fern, and creeper;
Every man holds in his hands the tool of the grim reaper;
Moonlight filters through the branches, playing tricks on their minds;
As they watch the sinuous shapes nearby and hope it's only vines;
There is the smell of cold sweat, from standing close to death’s door;
Mixed with the musty odor of leaves, rotting on the jungle floor;
They sample the air for other smells, as they slip between the trees;
Seeking a hint of nookmum sauce on the gentle jungle breeze;
There are blood-sucking leeches crawling in the night;
And strange birds cry out in nocturnal flight;
And in the absence of the sun;
Every shadow holds a gun;
They slip back in just before dawn, all too tired to speak;
Each one was glad not to find what they were sent to seek;
They had worked together as a team, but now the eastern sky was gleaming;
And each man must go to his own bunk, to sleep with his own demon.
